Scale House Operator - Dexter Construction

Antigonish , Nova Scotia

Dexter Construction is a large, diversified Construction Company engaged in all major aspects of the heavy civil construction industry within the Atlantic Provinces. We are currently seeking Scale House Operator for our 104 Highway Twinning project between Sutherlands River and Antigonish, Nova Scotia. This position is located at our Quarry in Barney’s River/Weaver’s Mountain.

Job Summary:
The Scale House Operator is responsible for greeting all incoming truck drivers at the scale house and weighing the trucks on the scale in a safe and efficient manner. The hours of operation for this position are Monday-Thursday 6am-6pm, Friday 6am-3pm. Weekend work may be required to meet scheduled demands. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Greet all incoming drivers at the scale house
  • Take orders for gravel and asphalt.
  • Dispatch and weigh trucks.
  • Organize trucks for hourly/by the load jobs as required.
  • Answer questions on job costs and quantities.
  • Arrange for prompt delivery of product.
  • Assist in maintaining facility site security and access control
  • Work closely with customers to ensure a high level of service.
  • Contribute to company safety and environmental policies.
  • Assist with coordination of trucking logistics and key performance metrics.
  • Close scale house gates at the end of each day
  • Be aware of surroundings at all times
  • Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task
  • Ensure safety of fellow employees
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, and Experience:

  • 1-2 years’ experience in a dispatch role or experience in a scale house or quarry environment is considered an asset.
  • Must have a valid NS driver’s license
  • Ability to keep work records and make reports
  • Ability to follow a firm schedule with minimal supervision
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be well versed in construction site protocols, rules and code of conduct
  • Ability to perform basic operations on a computer
  • Ability to perform a variety of manual tasks, requiring the use of independent judgement and action
  • Willingness to work in a team environment
  • Comply with all safety policies and procedures
